Surprise Him With Essential Oil Scented Beard Balm

Essential Oil Beard Balm DIY

I’ve recently started making my own bath products from all natural ingredients. As I’ve started getting older my skin has become more and more sensitive to chemicals and toxins found in commercially produced products.

I have a recipe for body lotion that I’ll share soon. My hubby loves it for his extra dry and cracked hands he gets in the winter.

And by adding my favorite essential oils to the blends I can create customized body and bath products that suit my needs. My favorite place to get essential oils (and I do get compensated for some of the products I mention on my site) is at Rocky Mountain Oils.

I talked about ideas for giving essential oils for gifts in this post. My newest favorite is the Holiday Pack

I’ve discoverd a creamy formula for a Beard balm that I want to give my youngest son. He has a really full and thick beard but very sensitive skin.

With a beard, his face becomes itchy, dry and flaky and the facial hair unruly.  I found the solution is for him to use a moisturizing beard balm. It acts as a styling aid and a leave in conditioner, similar to what is used in the hair on the top of the head.

Natural Ingredients

A good beard balm is made from all natural ingredients that help prevent irritating your skin or damaging your prized facial hair. But finding these can be difficult not to mention a bit on the pricey side. And by making your own,  you control the scent by using essential oils that appeal to you.

Making your own is easy and you can control the type of ingredients that go into it. All natural sealants include shea butter, beeswax or lanolin. Also make sure you use natural carrier oils to protect your skin. Jojoba, olive, avocado, sweet almond, grapeseed and fractionated coconut oil are great options.

The Ingredients and How to Choose

Beeswax is the glue that holds your balm together. Choose a good quality beeswax. You can find it at your local beekeeper or online. Beeswax comes in forms- bars, pellets, sheets.

The Butters are what makes it spread. The most common is Shea Butter.

Carrier oils are what make the beard and face moisturizer. It’s important to include them in your balm.

Essential oils are what give your balm the scent. And many offer other benefits. For example, tea tree oil is anti-viral, good for fighting the bacteria that causes acne. Choose oils that are packaged in amber bottles as they hold their properties better.

How to Make Essential Oil Scented Beard Balm

Here is an easy recipe to make your own beard balm using natural essential oils.

The  Manly Beard Balm Recipe

Ingredients

Base ingredients:
2 ounces Shea Butter
1 ounce Beeswax
4 ounces coconut carrier oil

Scents:
2 – 4 drops of your favorite Essential oil or a blend of two or more of your choice. Be sure that they are safe for use on skin.

Here are a few suggestions:
Sandalwood
Lemongrass
Cedar
Vanilla
Ylang-Ylang
Tea Tree
Rosemary
Peppermint

Equipment:
Candle making container or small vat. These can be purchased online or at craft stores.
Range or candle warmer
Tins for holding your beard balm or small mason jars. If you use mason jars, be sure to warm them before pouring hot liquid in them.

Step 1. Place the Shea butter, Beeswax and coconut carrier oil into a container set over very low heat. You can use a candle warmer for small batches. Another option is to fill your electric skillet with a small amount of water, heat it and place your vat in the water to heat the ingredients.

Step 2. Stir the mixture occasionally as the ingredients begin to melt. Do not boil. Remove from heat once it has melted completely.

Step 3. Working quickly, add a few drops of your essential oils into the melted balm, stirring until well blended.

Step 4. Immediately pour your balm into a storage tin and cover it.

Step 5. Let the balm sit overnight to cool completely.

Your balm will be ready to use the next day.

These make great last minute gifts. I like to make a skin care gift basket for my kids with Make Your Own products. For instance for a male, you could include the beard balm, shampoo, body lotion and lip balm in a leather travel tote. You can add extras like a beard brush, small scissors and a grooming kit.
